THE BESUMPAH (SWEARING) STONE
The swearing stone locally known as Bersumpah stone is one of the old myths that is long believed by most of Kubu Kejasung people living in Baru Village, Air Hitam subdistrict, Sarolangun regency. The Kubu people who live anywhere in Jambi also believe it, yet not all the people out of tribe.
The Besumpah stone is a big stone, just as big a mature elephant. There are two footprints on its upper surface, each of which belongs to Orang Kayo Hitam and Datuk Temenggung Merah Mato. One upon a time, its was a place where Orang Kayo Hitam stated his vows. One of the vows stated that they would establish and develop Jambi. The vow was stated after he engaged with Princes Pinang Masak, Datuk Temenggung Merah Mato's daughter to live with her ever after.
After stating the vow, Orang Kayo Hitam stepped on the Besumpah stone, followed by Datuk Temenggung Merah Mato. The swearing moment was also witnessed by all Kubu people. Bassed on a story, the size of the footprints is much bigger than modern man's footprints. It's as big as five mature man's feet combinate.
The existence of the Besumpah stone is deified by Kubu people. Until now, anyone of Kubu people who will be chosen as the leader of the tribe must state the vows before the stone.
